IN 1926 I published a book on X-rays and Electrons, which gave an account of the physics of x-rays as known at that time. This volume was written just after experiments had shown the complete correspondence between x-rays and light in their major features of spectra, polarization and dispersion. Also the essentially quantum phenomena of the photo-electric effect and the change of wavelength of scattered x-rays had been studied enough to show that x-ray energy is transmitted in directed quanta. Attempts at correlation between these op tical and corpuscular aspects of radiation were just beginning to meet with success.
