Error Calculus for Finance and Physics: The Language of Dirichlet Forms

Nicolas Bouleau, "Error Calculus for Finance and Physics: The Language of Dirichlet Forms"
Walter de Gruyter | 2003 | ISBN: 3110180367 | 234 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

Many recent advances in modelling within the applied sciences and engineering have focused on the increasing importance of sensitivity analyses. For a given physical, financial or environmental model, increased emphasis is now placed on assessing the consequences of changes in model outputs that result from small changes or errors in both the hypotheses and parameters. The approach proposed in this book is entirely new and features two main characteristics. Even when extremely small, errors possess biases and variances. The methods presented here are able, thanks to a specific differential calculus, to provide information about the correlation between errors in different parameters of the model, as well as information about the biases introduced by non-linearity. The approach makes use of very powerful mathematical tools (Dirichlet forms), which allow one to deal with errors in infinite dimensional spaces, such as spaces of functions or stochastic processes. The method is therefore applicable to non-elementary models along the lines of those encountered in modern physics and finance. This text has been drawn from presentations of research done over the past ten years and that is still ongoing. The work was presented in conjunction with a course taught jointly at the Universities of Paris 1 and Paris 6. The book is intended for students, researchers and engineers with good knowledge in probability theory.

Money and Ideas: Four Studies on Finance, Innovation and the Business Life Cycle
Publisher: Springer | Pages: 107 | 2009-11-24 | ISBN 1441912274 | PDF | 1 MB

From the start, businesses experience a bewildering array of opportunities and hurdles. At every stage of a firm’s life cycle, the primary obstacle is access to capital. Drawing from a variety of fields and empirical research perspectives, this book presents four scientific studies that explore the implications of financial constraints during start-up and subsequent phases.

The first study focuses on the financial challenges to the nascent entrepreneur – someone who is planning to, or has just started their business – and asks whether all innovative ideas get financed. Through a survey of 900 nascent entrepreneurs, this chapter demonstrates how the appropriability and feasibility of an innovation can be proven by using patents and prototypes in a signaling fashion. The second study demonstrates the strong motivation among scientists to pursue patents for non-financial reasons, such as professional prestige and reputation, and considers the strategic function in financial matters that patents play for the firm. The next chapter looks at the firm life cycle in the second stage of the business life cycle. As a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME), with employees and a more sophisticated supply and distribution network, the firm’s working capital requirements increase. This study focuses on the role played by local lending institutions, such as credit unions, especially as traditional banks avoid small businesses, and even more dramatically during periods of economics crisis. The concluding chapter explores the implications of start-up financing for economic growth and development. This study provocatively demonstrates that in countries that lack efficient financial, political, and legal institutions, corruption (often in the form of bribes) is a necessary condition for business development. Studying 2,500 African firms, the author argues that corruption negatively affects product and organizational innovation while it encourages the use of marketing innovation. Taken together, these studies offer new insights into the emergence of new businesses and the factors that influence their success.

The 100 Most Influential Inventors of All Time (The Britannica Guide to the World's Most Influential People)

The 100 Most Influential Inventors of All Time (The Britannica Guide to the World's Most Influential People)

Robert Curley, "The 100 Most Influential Inventors of All Time (The Britannica Guide to the World's Most Influential People)"
Rosen Education Service | 2009-12-20 | ISBN: 1615300031 | 376 pages | PDF | 3,5 MB

Just a few hundred years ago, life was far different than it is today. When people wanted to travel or communicate, they had to go on foot or horseback. A journey of just a few miles by this method could be a long, arduous process.

Whatever people owned—from clothing to tools—had to be made by hand. Work was manual, laborious, and often tedious. Illness was a constant threat; diseases rapidly spread through unsanitary conditions and were difficult to treat with the rudimentary medicines available. Today, life in the United States and other developed countries is about ease and convenience. Communication is global and instantaneous. Transportation can carry people across states, countries, and even entire continents in a matter of hours. Industry has been automated, providing people with plenty of time outside of work to enjoy leisure pursuits. Modern medical treatments have enabled people to stay healthy well into their eighth, ninth, or even tenth decade.

Inventory Management: Non-Classical Views

Inventory Management: Non-Classical Views
Publisher: CRC | Pages: 242 | 2009-08-11 | ISBN 1420079972 | PDF | 3 MB

Classical inventory management focuses on cost minimization as a performance measure, where many cost parameters are difficult to estimate and inventory system costs are hidden. Constantly changing in response to international competition and new technology, inventory management requires a new family of performance measures that represent situations more realistically. Establishing the foundation for new areas of research, Inventory Management: Non-Classical Views focuses on the need to design inventory systems that serve as a means of flexibility, to develop performance measures other than cost to control inventory, and to view inventory as a contributor to customer value creation.

Technology and Regulation: How Are They Driving Our Markets? (Zicklin School of Business Financial Markets Series)
Springer | Pages: 117 | 2009-07-31 | ISBN : 1441904794 | PDF | 1.2 MB

Two primary drivers have transformed the equity markets in recent years: technological advances and regulatory initiatives. How does modern, electronic technology facilitate trading, and to what extent does it present new challenges? How does regulation adjust to the changing structure of the markets, and to what extent is it itself a source of change? What are the new problems and solutions for handling institutional orders? On both sides of the Atlantic, what are the overall impacts of technology and regulation on market quality? The conference resulting in this volume brought together buyside and sellside practitioners, regulators, and academicians to address these and related issues.

This Time is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly

Carmen M. Reinhart, Kenneth Rogoff, "This Time is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly"
Princeton University Press | 2009 | ISBN: 0691142165 | 496 pages | PDF | 20,2 MB

Throughout history, rich and poor countries alike have been lending, borrowing, crashing--and recovering--their way through an extraordinary range of financial crises. Each time, the experts have chimed, "this time is different"--claiming that the old rules of valuation no longer apply and that the new situation bears little similarity to past disasters. This book proves that premise wrong. Covering sixty-six countries across five continents, This Time Is Different presents a comprehensive look at the varieties of financial crises, and guides us through eight astonishing centuries of government defaults, banking panics, and inflationary spikes--from medieval currency debasements to today's subprime catastrophe. Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff, leading economists whose work has been influential in the policy debate concerning the current financial crisis, provocatively argue that financial combustions are universal rites of passage for emerging and established market nations. The authors draw important lessons from history to show us how much--or how little--we have learned.

Using clear, sharp analysis and comprehensive data, Reinhart and Rogoff document that financial fallouts occur in clusters and strike with surprisingly consistent frequency, duration, and ferocity. They examine the patterns of currency crashes, high and hyperinflation, and government defaults on international and domestic debts--as well as the cycles in housing and equity prices, capital flows, unemployment, and government revenues around these crises. While countries do weather their financial storms, Reinhart and Rogoff prove that short memories make it all too easy for crises to recur.

An important book that will affect policy discussions for a long time to come, This Time Is Different exposes centuries of financial missteps.

Deborah Haas-Wilson, "Managed Care and Monopoly Power: The Antitrust Challenge"
Harvard University Press 2003 | ISBN-10: 0674010523 | 256 Pages | PDF | 1 MB

As millions of Americans are aware, health care costs continue to increase rapidly. Much of this increase is due to the development of new life-sustaining drugs and procedures, but part of it is due to the increased monopoly power of physicians, insurance companies, and hospitals, as the health care sector undergoes reorganization and consolidation. There are two tools to limit the growth of monopoly power: government regulation and antitrust policy. In this timely book, Deborah Haas-Wilson argues that enforcement of the antitrust laws is the tool of choice in most cases.

The antitrust laws, when wisely enforced, permit markets to work competitively and therefore efficiently. Competitive markets foster low prices and high quality. Applying antitrust tools wisely, however, is a tricky business, and Haas-Wilson carefully explains how it can be done. Focusing on the economic concepts necessary to the enforcement of the antitrust laws in health care markets, Haas-Wilson provides a useful roadmap for guiding the future of these markets.
