In Less Than A Second is the story of a young woman who was recently involved in a car accident. She tries a meditation from a metaphysical teacher to relieve her pain and during the course of this meditation something unusual happens and she finds that she has been transported to a distant planet.
The planet, called the Anchor Reorientation Center, is run by an alliance of interstellar races called The Universal Brotherhood, who have the ability to scan and manipulate time. When she arrives she is assigned a Facilitator called Aranon, who with the Reorientation Center's Director, Dorn, draw up a pact that will guide them through what they call her reorientation process.
She also learns that others from Earth have come to Anchor as well and then, after reorientation, have been returned to Earth with new insight and the tools to assist the planet Earth in averting a future interstellar calamity that originates on Earth itself.

The subject of this book is a Flower class corvette built in Vancouver and commissioned in January 1941. Agassiz (pronounced Aga-see) in her as-built, short forecastle configuration differed considerably from the com­mon conception of the long-forecastle 'Flower', such as the museum ship I1MCS Sackville in Halifax, Nova Scotia, or the Greek corvette Kriezis (ex-Coreopsis) which represented HMS Compass Rose in the film The Cruel Sea, or 1/72 scale models from the popular Matchbox/Revell kit.
It was, however, the short-forecastle configuration that was in the mind's eye of Nicholas Monsarrat when he wrote The Cruel Sea, HM Corvette, East Coast Corvette and others, and this version best represents the Canadian Flowers as they were flung into the thick of the bitter Atlantic convoy battles of 1941-2, described in James Lamb's The Corvette Navy and Alan Easton's 50 North: Canada's Atlantic Battleground.
In 1939, like the other combatants, Canada plunged into a war for which her naval staff were ill prepared. Despite the U-boat campaign waged by Germany in World War I, little attention had been paid in the 1920s and 1930s to the problems of anti-submarine warfare, since it was widely believed that the future threat to merchantmen would come from surface raiders and from aircraft. The RCN had investigated the pos­sibility of building escorts based on the handsome RN Halcyon class sloops, but these plans had not reached fruition by the time hostilities broke out. The timely arrival of plans for a 'Patrol Vessel of Whaler Type' from the British Admiralty in 1939 thus offered a solution to a very serious weakness in Canadian naval preparations for the new war. The corvette (as the new vessel became known) was widely seen as a stopgap until more sophisticated escorts were available, but in the event was built in great numbers.

The setting, unlike other Robert Langdon novels, is stateside, and in Brown's hands Washington D.C. is as fascinating as Paris or Vatican City (note to the D.C. tourism board: get your "Lost Symbol" tour in order). And, as with other Dan Brown books, the pace is relentless, the revelations many, and there is an endless parade of intriguing factoids that will make you feel like you are spending the afternoon with Robert Langdon and the guys from Mythbusters.

Nothing is as it seems in a Robert Langdon novel, and The Lost Symbol itself is no exception--a page-turner to be sure, but Brown also challenges his fans to open their minds to new information. Skeptical? Imagine how many other thrillers would spawn millions of Google searches for noetic science, superstring theory, and Apotheosis of Washington. The Lost Symbol is brain candy of the best sort--just make sure to set aside time to enjoy your meal. --Daphne Durham

Most homes in the past were not elite, wealthy interiors complete with high fashion furnishings, designed by well-known architects and designers, as many domestic histories often seem to have assumed. As this book makes clear, there were in fact an enormous variety of house interiors in England during the period 1750–1850, reflecting the location, status and gender of particular householders, as well as their changing attitudes, tastes and aspirations. By focusing on non-metropolitan homes, which represented the majority of households in England, this study highlights the need for historians to look beyond prevailing attitudes that often reduce interiors to generic descriptions based on high fashions of the decorative arts. Instead it shows how numerous social and cultural influences affected the manner in which homes were furnished and decorated. Issues such as the availability of goods, gender, regional taste, income, the second-hand market, changing notions of privacy and household hierarchies and print culture, could all have a significant impact on domestic furnishing. The study ends with a discussion of how domestic interiors of historic properties have been presented and displayed in modern times, highlighting how competing notions of the past can cloud as well as illuminate the issue. Combining cultural history and qualitative analysis of evidence, this book presents a new way of looking at 'ordinary' and 'provincial' homes that enriches our understanding of English domestic life of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

This book features more Rube Goldberg machines than the first one. However, Riley was drawing more from the British cartoonist W. Heath Robinson, a British contemporary of Goldberg’s with a similar interest in implausible machinery. The term “Heath Robinson contraption” is used in Britain in exactly the way “Rube Goldberg machine” is used in the U.S.

This book also contains more parodies of various recent cultural and historical events of the time. For example, there is one image of a bunny tying himself to Gollum, seeking the ring a the top of the hill, and also a bunny pouring pepper into Sauron’s eye from The Lord of the Rings, and an image of the falling Saddam Hussein statue, and a scene with The Doctor [from Doctor Who, retreating to the Tardis from a Dalek.

The book proved so popular that pirate scans started to circulate heavily online as “Bunnies Suicide” prompting the publisher to send a DMCA request to Google, which was indexing the site and its images.
